Accountable GP

From 1st April 2015, practices are required to allocate all patients (including children) with a named accountable GP.

The named GP is responsible for the coordination and delivery of all appropriate services, where required based on clinical judgement, to each of their patients.

  • Patients do not need to see their named GP when they book an appointment with the practice.
  • Patients are entitled to choose to see any GP or nurse in the practice.

Requests to change your GP

Under NHS regulations, every patient is assigned a named accountable GP who has overall responsibility for overseeing their care. This is mainly an administrative requirement and does not restrict which GP you can see. You may continue to book appointments with any GP in the practice, and we encourage you to see whichever clinician you feel provides the best continuity of care.

As a large practice with over 40,000 registered patients, three sites, and 26 GPs, we allocate named GPs according to the number of clinical sessions each doctor works. This ensures workload is shared fairly. When GPs join or leave the practice, we must carry out bulk reallocations, which means we cannot accommodate individual requests or exclude patients from future rebalancing.

We understand that many patients have a preferred GP, but we are unable to guarantee that the named GP recorded on your medical record will remain the same over time. However, you can always request to see your preferred GP when booking appointments, and we will do our best to accommodate this whenever possible.
