Weight loss Injections
We are aware of the publicity regarding weight loss injections and the possibility of these being prescribed in primary care. Unfortunately, arrangements for this have not yet been agreed in BLMK and therefore we are not currently able to prescribe weight loss injections for obesity in primary care.
What you need to know!
In the first two years entry criteria have been set by NHS England to allow safe entry of this repurposed medicine into the health system.
- We will provide an update as soon as more information becomes available.
- When we get further information about referral to service or commissioned to offer this service, we will offer suitable appointments to our patients.
‼️If we are asked/commissioned/advised to offer this service/refer to specialist clinics, the criteria to qualify is very strict‼️
Calculations say that there will be 220,000 patients UK wide that will qualify, please see eligibility criteria below:
A BMI of 40 kg/m2 or higher (37.5 kg/m2 for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean ethnic backgrounds) and at least four of these additional conditions, which will already have been diagnosed by your GP or another medical professional:
- Hypertension
- Dyslipidaemia
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD)
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus
We are waiting to hear more from BLMK ICB about how the service would be offered.
If it is agreed that Tirzepatide is the right choice you will also be required to agree to engage with behavioural support and wraparound care.
